Rovastin 5mg

Mechanism of Action (MOA):

Rosuvastatin, the active ingredient in Rovastin 5mg, inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This inhibition leads to decreased hepatic cholesterol production, resulting in an upregulation of LDL receptors on liver cells. The increased uptake and breakdown of LDL cholesterol lower its levels in the bloodstream, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular events.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults:
  • The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily.
  • Depending on individual response and therapeutic goals, the dose may be adjusted up to a maximum of 40 mg once daily.
• Administration:
  • Take the tablet at any time of day, with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Side Effects:

• Common:
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
• Serious:
  • Myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
  • Liver enzyme abnormalities
  • Memory loss (in rare cases)

Drug Interactions:

• Concurrent use with gemfibrozil significantly increases rosuvastatin exposure, raising the risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis. Combination therapy should be avoided.
• Use with caution when co-administered with atazanavir, darunavir, ezetimibe, fibrates, itraconazole, lopinavir, or tipranavir; dose adjustments may be necessary.

Precautions:

• Renal Impairment: Use with caution; dose adjustments may be necessary.
• Hepatic Impairment: Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of liver transaminases.
• Pregnancy and Lactation: Contraindicated; may cause fetal harm.
• Alcohol Consumption: Limit intake due to potential liver effects.
• Diabetes: Monitor blood sugar levels regularly, as rosuvastatin may cause an increase in blood sugar.
