Mechanism of Action (MOA)

• Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide: Acts on the cough center in the medulla oblongata to suppress the cough reflex, providing relief from dry, non-productive cough.

• Chlorpheniramine Maleate: Functions as a histamine H1-receptor antagonist, reducing allergy symptoms like sneezing and runny nose by blocking histamine action.​

Dosage and Administration

• Children under 12 years: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) every 6 hours

• Children over 12 years: 2 teaspoonfuls (10 ml) every 6 hours

• Children under 6 years: Safety and efficacy not established; use with caution and under medical supervision​

Side Effects

• Drowsiness or sedation

• Dizziness

• Nausea and vomiting

• Dry mouth (xerostomia)

• Blurred vision

• Urinary retention

• Excitability or restlessness, especially in children

• Rarely: seizures, palpitations, or hallucinations​

Drug Interactions

• Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Concurrent use can lead to hypertensive crisis; avoid combination.

• Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants: Alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers may enhance drowsiness; use cautiously.

• Other Antihistamines or Antitussives: May increase the risk of side effects; consult a healthcare provider before combining.​

Precautions

• Children under 6 years: Use with caution; not recommended unless prescribed by a physician.

• Pregnancy and Lactation: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

• Glaucoma: May exacerbate condition; use cautiously.

• Prostatic Hypertrophy: May cause urinary retention; monitor symptoms.

• Chronic Respiratory Conditions: Use with caution in asthma or chronic bronchitis.

• Operating Machinery or Driving: May cause drowsiness; avoid such activities if affected.​
